Supplementation of vitamins and minerals - when and how to use it?

Why is vitamin and mineral supplementation so important in dairy cows?

The performance of dairy cows, their health and fertility largely depend on whether the body has access to the appropriate amount of vitamins and minerals. Although the basis of nutrition is always a well-balanced feed dose, research shows clearly: roughage and concentrate feed alone very often do not fully cover the needs of cows, especially during periods of increased metabolic stress, such as the beginning of lactation or the perinatal period.

Vitamin and microelement deficiencies do not always give clear symptoms immediately. They often manifest themselves indirectly - a decrease in milk yield, poorer immunity, reproductive problems or greater susceptibility to mastitis. Therefore, supplementation is not an "add-on", but an element of conscious herd management.

When is supplementation particularly necessary?

Scientific reviews and practical materials show that the need for vitamins and minerals varies depending on the production phase of the cow. The greatest risk of deficiency occurs during the transition period, i.e. a few weeks before and after calving. This is when the cow's body intensively mobilizes reserves, and at the same time feed intake is limited.

In winter and early spring, the quality of feed is an additional problem. Silage, even well prepared, may have a reduced content of some vitamins, especially A and E. In such conditions, supplementation becomes crucial to maintain immunity and stable milk production.

The most important vitamins in the nutrition of dairy cattle

Vitamins A, D and E play a central role in the health of dairy cows. Vitamin A supports immunity and proper functioning of the epithelium, which is important, among others: for the health of the udder. Vitamin D is responsible for calcium and phosphorus metabolism, and its deficiency increases the risk of postpartum problems. In turn, vitamin E, often discussed in the context of mastitis, acts as a strong antioxidant and supports the immune system.

Research shows that during periods of increased metabolic stress, the demand for these vitamins increases, and their deficiency may reduce not only health, but also milk yield.

Microelements - small doses, big importance

Microelements such as zinc, copper, selenium, manganese and cobalt are needed in small amounts, but their role is crucial. Of particular interest are new reviews on cobalt and vitamin B12, which show that cobalt indirectly affects energy metabolism because it enables the synthesis of vitamin B12 in the rumen.

Micronutrient deficiencies can lead to silent economic losses: poorer feed conversion, reproductive problems, and declines in milk quality. Importantly, both deficiency and excess of microelements can be problematic - that is why precise dosing is so important.

Form of supplementation - not only "what", but also "how"

Sources indicate that supplementation can be carried out in various ways: through TMR additions, mineral licks or - in certain cases - vitamin and mineral injections. Empirical research shows that injections of microelements and vitamins A and E can bring results in a short time, especially in cows with clear deficiencies.

At the same time, it is emphasized that blind supplementation is not a good solution. The best results are achieved by an approach based on the analysis of the dose and the real demand of the herd.

Supplementation and precise nutrition - where is the role of Smart Feed?

Effective supplementation starts with knowing how much of the ingredients actually go into the manger, not just what's written in the recipe. In practice, differences between the planned and executed dose may mean that even a well-selected premix does not fulfill its role.

This is where Smart Feed comes in - as a tool supporting the control of dose implementation. The application allows you to check whether minerals and vitamins are added in appropriate amounts and whether the dose is repeatable from day to day. This is especially important because irregular administration of supplements may reduce their effectiveness, even if the preparations themselves are of good quality.

Smart Feed does not replace a nutritional advisor, but helps translate his recommendations into everyday practice on the farm.

vitamin and mineral supplementation

Supplementation of vitamins and minerals makes the most sense when it is conscious, tailored to the production phase and based on real data. Research clearly shows that properly selected vitamins and trace elements support immunity, metabolic health and milk yield, but only when used regularly and in appropriate doses.
