Acidification of feed in ruminants - impact on health and performance
Acidification of feed, and consequently acidification of the rumen, is one of the most serious problems that a dairy and beef cattle breeder may face. The most common reasons are too quick a change of the dose to one richer in grains and meals, lack of adequate amount of roughage with a high effective fiber content, and too few meals during the day. Feeding behavior also plays an important role - if cows have access to feed with an uneven structure, they may choose tastier, more energetic fragments, which additionally increases the risk of pH drops in the rumen.

It is worth using buffering additives, such as sodium carbonate, which help stabilize pH. It is equally important to maintain the appropriate length of feed particles and administer it at regular intervals, which helps avoid sudden pH fluctuations in the rumen. It is also necessary to regularly check the quality and freshness of the TMR to prevent it from heating up and the development of undesirable microorganisms.
