Feed storage - how to reduce nutritional losses
Feed is the basis of animal health and performance. Even the best quality feed loses its value if it is not stored properly. Loss of dry matter, mold growth, heating of silage or contamination can significantly reduce its nutritional value and even pose a threat to the health of the herd. Therefore, proper storage of feed is not only a matter of order on the farm, but above all, profitability and safety of production.
Humidity and temperature control
Feed should be stored in conditions that ensure appropriate humidity and temperature. For dry feed, such as cereals or concentrated mixtures, the optimal humidity is below 60%, and the storage temperature should not exceed 20°C. Thanks to this, we reduce the risk of mold and pest development.
The hay should be well dried before storage, and the silages must be appropriately compacted and tightly covered with foil to minimize air access. Dry matter losses in improperly compacted piles can reach up to 12%, which is reflected in the costs for the breeder.
Silages - how to avoid losses?
In the case of silage, it is crucial to quickly close the pile and use barrier foils that limit the access of oxygen. Hardening the surface of the pile and using fermentation additives helps maintain high quality of the feed and reduces the risk of it heating up. The pace at which silage is removed is also important - it is recommended to use at least 1.5-2 meters per week in winter and 2.5-3 meters in summer to prevent mold from developing.
Register!Hygiene and protection against pests
Feed stores should be clean, dry and well-ventilated. It is necessary to regularly remove the remains of old feed and use protection against rodents and birds. Feed additives and premixtures should be stored in closed packaging, on insulated floors and away from moisture.
Inventory rotation and quality control
The "first in, first out" principle allows you to avoid keeping feed beyond the recommended time. Regularly checking the condition of the feed - its smell, color and structure - allows you to quickly detect problems. Feed with signs of mold or deterioration should be removed immediately.
Use the Smart Feed application!
Smart Feed Sp. z o. o. supports breeders not only in planning doses, but also in controlling the quality of feed. Thanks to the inventory monitoring function, the application allows you to better manage inventory, plan any changes and react faster to possible losses. Combined with knowledge about proper storage, our application will help you reduce costs and take care of your animals' health.
Proper storage of feed is an investment that definitely pays off. Maintaining appropriate humidity and temperature conditions, hygiene, protection against pests and the appropriate pace of silage selection help minimize the loss of nutritional values. When combined with the right tools, such as Smart Feed, farmers can effectively take care of the quality of feed and the health of their herd.
